Various versions have been put forward concerning both the date of their origin, and their destination. A similar monument lies on the Yelpin Crag situated 105 km south from Yerevan. Although it is slightly over 50 m high, it is best to have special training before climbing it, even despite the presence of the stairs that lead to the peak. The foothill itself presents a rather shallow grotto with polished walls that are called mehyan (pagan temple). The etymology of the name has been traced to the ancient cult of Mher (Mihr), and many historians view it as a key to the mystery. Obeying the will of his parents’ shadows, Mher settles on the Crow’s rock, where he must reside until the establishment of justice on the Earth. Twice a year he steps over the stone wall to find out the current distribution of power and perhaps to announce the approach of the specified date. The interrelation between Mher and the mountain is reflected in the ancient legends about the hero’s birth out of the rock. Many specialists assert that the very scene of confinement of the representative of the epic family to the Crow’s rock is the missing part of the Avestian Mihr’s Mysteries. Such a conclusion is suggested by the herald of the coming changes, the symbol of one great loop termination and the beginning of a new one, the crow. The proponents of the mentioned version contend that the stairs of the Yelpin rock symbolize the gradual approach of the rule of justice on the Earth.

Individual communities that realized their self-sufficiency felt the need for an autonomous or sovereign house-keeping. This was reflected in the designation of distinct borders around the site of the ancient settlement. Since there were no natural limits (gorges, mountain ranges, water-ways, etc), they erected a stone wall along the whole perimeter of the settlement. Such constructions were called cyclopean because of the rough or rock-face stones from which they were made. The huge clods were clamped up with egg-lime or clay mortar, while the gaps between them were filled with smaller stones. Armenia is extremely rich in such monuments. The most ancient extant monuments date from the 5th – 4th millennium BC. However, it is hardly possible to assume that there are no older constructions. Whole complexes of cyclopean type lie on the western shore of Lake Sevan and on the Shirak plateau. The ruins of fortress walls can also be found in the foothill of the Ararat Valley and on the adjacent territories. Metsamor hill is situated 30 km west from Yerevan. It occupies a territory of about 30 hectares and is famous for its numerous alternate cultural layers. More than six thousand years ago, the locals erected a stone citadel, thus establishing the borders of the settlement and marking their sovereignty. The walls of the citadel are in rather good conditions now. Remarkably enough, the settlement existed on the hill up to the 18th century.

The river head of this longest inflow of the Vorotan springs from a Karabakh volcanic massif and is fed by the rivulets of the mountainous Dali Region. The 113-km-long river forms several canyons on its way. A site of ancient settlement, dating from the Mesolithic Age, is situated in one of them, near the village of Kornidzor, 300 km south from Yerevan. It has not yet been fully investigated, although the first effort shows that the settlement did not emerge spontaneously like many of the streamside ones, but was rather built by a devised plan. This explains the fact that the stone dwellings of the settlement form two arched curves going down parallel to the river-bed. The extension of each terrace is about 100 m and presupposes the presence of twelve structures with a distance of two to ten meters in between. This ancient settlement was supposedly a tribal site or a family colony. The dwellings have a pyramidal shape and are made from enormous tuff clods (up to 200 kg and even more) cemented with egg-lime mortar. The height of the roof is about two meters. The number of such ancient settlements on the territory might be much greater. The restoration of the architectural and cultural aspect of the settlement certainly requires further investigation and additional work.

The tradition of fairytale gates cut through the parent material remains one of the most intriguing issues in history. Their mystery consists in the fact that the gates are so much merged with the mountain that an ill-informed man is virtually unable to find their location. The archaeologists discovered large patterns of such monuments at the border of the 19th – 20th centuries, on the slopes of the Sesame mountain range, around Lake Van. The stone stairs alongside with the mysterious gates immediately attracted the orientalists’ attention. The latter contend that Mt Sesame formed the basis of the famous fairytale of Ali-Baba and Forty Thieves. The territory of present-day Armenia still preserves the mysterious gates approaching which one involuntarily wants to pronounce the magic words Open Sesame! One of such gates is situated 40 km west from Yerevan, on the territory of Udjan village. When tightly closed, it really becomes invisible against the overall background of the mountain. This very circumstance predetermined the appearance of a later tradition to pronounce aloud the spell addressed to magical gates.

Unlike the states of adjoining Mesopotamia, Ancient Armenia was not a clay civilization. Their cuneiform was carved on rocks. Their fortresses, palaces and temples were not made of clay either. Founded by king Rusa II in the 7th century BC, the city of the god of warfare, Teyshebaini, is one of the rare exceptions. Being a typical ancient Asian city, this unique monument is situated on Karmir-Blur, in the administrative part of Yerevan. During archaeological excavations guided by the prominent orientalist Boris Piotrovski, scientists found whole storehouses. Grains of wheat, sesame, and barley for beer were kept in enormous clay containers (karas). In ancient times Armenia was called the land of barley-drink. At the very end of the 5th century BC, the Greek historian Xenophon wrote in his Anabasis about the wide popularity of beer on the territory of Armenia. One of the major administrative and military centers of Ararat Kingdom, Teyshebaini, existed for a rather short period of time. After the rule of Rusa II the state, which had once been so powerful, began declining little by little. Five other kings ruled the country in subsequent sixty years. However, scarcely any records can be found in verbose Araratian and Assyrian inscriptions. In the 7th – 6th centuries BC, under the attacks of third forces, including the growing Iranian tribal alliances, the two uncompromising great powers, Assyria and Ararat, having always contended for the palm of supremacy, finally sank into oblivion.

Very few cities in the world possess documentary evidence of their own origin. The thirteenth capital city of Armenia, however, is one of them. In 1879, an inhabitant of Erivan came across a basalt stone with cuneiform in the foothills of Arin-Berd, which immediately attracted specialists’ attention. Archaeological excavations revealed a stunning bastion with fortress walls and temples, granaries and storage rooms, residential areas and military quarters. On October 25, 1950, archaeologists found cuneiform text inscribed on basalt steles. This made it possible to establish the fact that the monument under consideration was the Erebuni Fortress, which had been built by one of the greatest monarchs of Ararat, Argishti I. Thus, they managed to ascertain not only the etymology of the Armenian capital, but also its age. According to Khorkoruni chronicle, the king founded Erebuni in his fifth year on the throne, which is 783–782 BC. Argishti I, the son of Menua, who reigned over the country for more than twenty years, was an excellent warrior and the most influential ruler of the time. Under his reign, the country became one of the most powerful monarchies of the ancient world. Even the pathetic Assyrian inscriptions depicted the King with expressions demonstrating badly disguised fear: “Argishti, a Urartian, whose name is as fearful as a tempest, and whose power is extensive…”

The great Kingdom of Van was established on the territory of the Armenian plateau in the 9th century BC. Traditionally regarding the area as a place of worship of reviving Nature, neighboring nations called the new kingdom Ararat, or Urartu according to the Assyrian transcription. And even though it existed for less than three hundred years, it was recognized all over the world. Basalt stones describing the great deeds of powerful kings, the steles, make the advanced stage of its development self-evident. A well-preserved stele that belonged to the rulers of Ararat has been found on the territory of Zvartnots Cathedral, 20 km west from Yerevan. The cuneiform carved on behalf of King Rusa II consists of 47 lines and recounts the King’s economic activity, especially the construction of irrigation canal. Surprisingly enough, the irrigation system that was built about three thousand years ago is still in perfect working order.

It is situated in the administrative part of Yerevan and occupies the territory of the hill with a total area of six hectares. The houses that have been found here have a stone basis and brickwork. They form a single unified group surrounded with a powerful fortress enclosure. The population of Shengavit lived in rounded dwellings (with a diameter of 6-8 m) and adjoining quadrangular lodgings. The metallic items found in Shengavit are extremely similar to those discovered during the excavation works in the Sumer city Ur. Those are copper bracelets, spiral ornaments (ringlets), awls, leaf-shaped spear-heads, a flat broadsword and a huge axe with an opening for the handle. The town was one of the centers of copper exportation to Lower Mesopotamia, Asia Minor and the Caucasus. The establishment of the town dates back to the 4th millennium BC. Among the other stunning archeological materials in Shangavit of particular interest are the skulls of typically Armenoid type. Having been formed about six thousand years before, this anthropological type was found in the second stratum of Anatolian Troy, in the Persian Tepesi-Alik, and in Mesopotamian cities Ur and Kish. Many inhabitants of the Armenian plateau probably migrated there in the 4th – 3rd millennium BC.

The period of their origin varies greatly in different historic sources, ranging from eight to five thousand years ago. Several cave complexes lie on the slopes above the Ararat Valley, the most famous one being the grotto with seven gates. This monument consists of seven alternate halls stretching along a single corridor. Seven stone doors used to lead to each of those halls. Although the gates did not survive after severe landslides, they can still be found in the adjacent cave complexes.

The height of the extant gates is about half meter, so it is only possible to get inside the cave bending down. The technology of building is astonishing by itself. The ease with which the heavy flat monolith opens is accounted for its axis location on a sliding stone joint which secures the rotation. It is one of the oldest methods of using a stone wheel for building purposes. Taking into consideration the fact that the first samples of the wheel in Armenia date from the 3rd century BC (the clay model from Arich), many specialists contend that the Udjan gate is about five thousand years old. Legend has it that the caves were plundered during the Arabs’ invasion into Armenia in the 7th – 8th centuries. It is believed that it was right here that the Arabs accidentally came across the magic gates, which resulted in the appearance of the corresponding plots of The Arabian Nights.
